CMS Splits Road Doubleheader with St. Katharine

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team used a nine-run fourth inning to take the opening game 12-8, but fell in the nightcap as St. Katharine rallied late for a 3-1 win as the two teams split a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.

With the split, CMS moves to 7-11 overall on the season, while Saint Katherine moves to 4-18.

In the opener, Ashleigh Adkins hit a three-run double to key the nine-run fourth, as CMS took a 10-3 lead after trailing 3-1 early. Paige Zimmerman started the rally with an RBI single, and ended it with a second RBI single in the same inning. In between, Ari Livi had a two-run single to give CMS the lead for good at 4-3, Emma Suh had a bases loaded RBI single, and Adkins cleared the bases with a three-run double to push the lead to 8-3, before coming home on an Abby Thompson single.

Saint Katherine kept rallying, and pulled within 10-7 after a four-run fifth, but Adkins drove in her fourth run with a grounder and then Kristin LeBlanc added a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Suh, Zimmerman and Livi were all 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Athenas, while Kaili Aqui was 3-for-4.

In the nightcap, CMS took a 1-0 lead in the second on an Emily Nutting RBI double, but St. Katherine scored three times with two outs in the sixth to take the lead and retired CMS in order in the seventh.

The Athenas will be back in action this weekend for a three-game SCIAC series with Redlands, facing the Bulldogs at home first on Friday at 3 p.m.
