CMS Softball Closes Out NFCA Leadoff Classic with Two Defeats

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team had clicked offensively at the NFCA Leadoff Classic with 23 runs in its previous three games, winning two, but the bats went quiet on the final day as the Athenas dropped a 3-0 decision to Illinois Wesleyan and an 8-1 decision to Christopher Newport on Sunday.

The losses drop CMS to 5-9 on the season, while Christopher Newport remains undefeated at 9-0 and Illinois Wesleyan picked up its first win of the NFCA Leadoff Classic and moves to 1-4.

Emma Suh was 2-for-3 in the loss to Illinois Wesleyan and was 1-for-3 and scored the lone run against Christopher Newport. Ananya Koneti and Ari Livi also had singles against Illinois Wesleyan, while Lauren Richards, Destiny Garcia and Kristin LeBlanc had singles for the Athenas against Christopher Newport.

The Athenas went 2-4 over the weekend at the Leadoff Classic, but had some moments to build on as the season moves forward. CMS picked up a win over nationally ranked St. John Fisher (No. 15) and suffered a narrow 6-5 loss to No. 6 Eastern Connecticut, leading 5-2 before the Warriors were able to come back for a late win. CMS also had two other losses to ranked teams, falling to No. 19 Christopher Newport and No. 20 Linfield.

CMS will return to action in eight days, when it travels to take on San Diego Christian on March 14.
