Softball Swept by Regals in SCIAC Doubleheader

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Athenas dropped both games of Saturday's twin bill with the visiting Regals of Cal Lutheran. Despite a nine-strikeout performance from Anna Gurr (CMC), CMS was unable to answer Cal Lutheran's two-run sixth inning in Game One and fell 2-1. Game Two was much of the same. The Athenas scored first early, but could not answer two Regal runs, falling 2-1.

Game One: Cal Lutheran defeats CMS 2-1

In the first pitchers' dual of the day, it was the Regals who emerged victorious with a 2-1 win. Gurr tossed a season-high nine strikeouts, but the offense was unable to match that of Cal Lu.

The Athenas brought in the first run of the game in the bottom of the third. Jessica Fox (CMC) got things going for CMS with a single to shallow left and a Rachel Perley (HMC) groundout advanced her to scoring position. Fox took third on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI single from Reeve Grobecker (CMC) to give CMS a 1-0 lead.

The game was quiet for the next two innings until the Regals struck for two in the top of the sixth. Three hits in the inning gave Cal Lu a 2-1 edge over the Athenas, and this is how the game would end.

Fox led CMS with two hits and Grobecker logged a hit and an RBI. Gurr went all seven innings and struck out nine in her fifth loss of the season (10-5).

Game Two: Cal Lutheran defeats CMS 2-1

The second half of the twin bill was similar to the first, with the Athenas striking first but falling to the Regals 2-1.

Just as in Game One, CMS scored the first run of the contest in the bottom of the third. Grobecker led off the inning with a single and advanced on a wild pitch before taking third on a sacrifice bunt by Molly Spaniac (CMC). An RBI groundout by Chloe Amarilla (CMC) knocked in Grobecker to give the Athenas a 1-0 advantage.

The Regals answered with a run in the fourth as well as the fifth, taking a 2-1 lead they would hold for the rest of the game.

Amarilla took the loss in Game Two and now owns a record of 7-3. Gurr took over in relief for the final two innings and struck out three.

Fox recorded two more hits in the game to bring her total for the day to four. Amarilla had a hit and knocked in a run.

With the losses, CMS falls to a record of 8-8 in SCIAC play and 19-9 overall. They travel to Whittier next Saturday, Apr. 7 to take on the Poets in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
