Softball Falls to Pomona-Pitzer in SCIAC Doubleheader

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team saw their win-streak come to an end at 10 games when they dropped both games in Saturday's twin bill at Pomona-Pitzer. The Athenas fell by one run in both contests, dropping Game One 5-4 on a walk-off base hit before coming up short, 3-2, in Game Two. CMS now sits at a record of 18-6 overall and 7-5 in SCIAC play.

Game One: Pomona-Pitzer defeats CMS 5-4

It took all seven innings for the Sagehens to best the Athenas in Game One. Pomona-Pitzer put a dent in the board first, scratching a run across in the bottom of the first inning.

CMS responded in the top of the third, taking a 2-1 lead. Savannah Green (CMC) walked before Molly Spaniac (CMC) doubled to put both in scoring position. Chloe Amarilla (CMC) put CMS back on top, extending her hit-streak to 17 games with a two RBI double to left center.

Pomona-Pitzer evened the game at two apiece in the home half of the fourth, bringing a run in on an RBI groundout.

Reeve Grobecker (CMC) and Spaniac got things going in the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles. Amarilla came in clutch for the Athenas for the second time in the game, plating Grobecker on an RBI single to center, giving CMS back the lead at 3-2.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Olivia Campion crushed a two-run shot to give the Sagehens a 4-3 lead after five.

The Athenas took advantage of Sagehen misplays in the top of the sixth when Kawai Scanlan (SC) scored to tie the game at four.

CMS was unable to add to their lead in the top of the seventh and Liz Rodarte singled in the bottom of the inning to push Pomona-Pitzer ahead for a walk-off 5-4 win.

Megan Perron (CMC) came on in relief of Anna Gurr (CMC) in the seventh and suffered her first loss of the season.

Amarilla led the Athenas with three hits in the game and three RBI. Spaniac recorded two hits including a double.

Game Two: Pomona-Pitzer defeats CMS 3-2

The second half of the twin bill was quieter through the first few innings. Amarilla got the ball in Game Two and held the Pomona-Pitzer hitless through the first three innings.

The Sagehens busted the game open in the bottom of the fourth with a one-out double off the bat of Makensey Druckman, plating two. Another run came in on a wild pitch and the Sagehens took a 3-0 lead into the fifth.

Maddie Valdez (CMC) got the top of the fifth started for the Athenas with a single through the left side. Jessica Fox (CMC) moved her to second with a single into shallow right center before Green reached on an error by the third baseman to keep the inning alive. Grobecker ripped a hard ground ball off the first baseman to knock in a run and cut the deficit to 3-1.

Valdez singled up the middle in the bottom of the sixth to get a rally going for CMS before Scanlan dropped a single into shallow left to put two on with two outs. Fox stepped into the box next and laced a single over the head of the third baseman to plate Valdez and bring the Athenas back within one.

The Athenas attempted a comeback in the top of the seventh. Amarilla extended her hit-streak to 18 games with a single through the left side, advancing Spaniac who had reached on a fielder's choice, but their efforts fell short and CMS dropped Game Two 3-2.

The loss was the first for Amarilla this season and her record in the circle now sits at 7-1. She struck out five in her six innings.

Valdez, Scanlan, and Fox each had two hits in the game.

With the losses, CMS falls to 18-6 overall and 7-5 in conference. The Athenas travel to Redlands on Friday to take on the Bulldogs in a SCIAC doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
