Automatic qualification on the line for Athenas in SCIAC Tournament

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team has won four Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Postseason Tournaments and all as the No. 2 seed. The Athenas finished the SCIAC regular season at 18-10 behind No. 1-seeded University of La Verne at 20-8. Whittier College (16-12) and Chapman University (14-14) make up the rest of the tournament.

As the No. 1 seed, La Verne plays host for the SCIAC Postseason Tournament in the inaugural year of the three-day format. On Friday, May 5, La Verne faces Chapman at 2 p.m. and then CMS faces Whittier at 4:30 p.m. The rest of the tournament schedule can be found on the SCIAC's Tournament Central Page. As it is a conference postseason event, admission will be charged: $10 general, $5 seniors & military, free for children, students, faculty and staff.

With the new format, the team that can win one game each day will come out the victor and earn the SCIAC's automatic qualification to the NCAA Tournament.

The Athenas have relied upon junior pitcher Anna Gurr (CMC) all season. She was recently named the conference's Pitcher of the Year after leading CMS and the SCIAC in almost every pitching category. Her 0.63 ERA sits at No. 5 nationally. Behind the plate is classmate Chloe Rodman (CMC) who has caught all 160-plus innings of Gurr's.

The Athena defense boasts a .973 fielding percentage that leads the SCIAC and is 13th in the country. Supporting Gurr in the infield are juniors Briana Halle (CMC) and Carly Roleder (CMC) at the corners and sophomores Abigail Metsch (SC) and Reeve Grobecker (CMC) up the middle. The outfield is captained by sophomore Ande Troutman (CMC) who is joined by a mix of four different CMS players who have seen time on the grass.

Offensively, Troutman was named the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year after leading the entire conference in batting average and on base percentage. Classmate Chloe Amarilla (CMC) stepped into the designated player role this season and leads CMS with two homers. Grobecker and freshman Marissa Valdovinos (SC) bring speed to the plate and bases.

CMS faces Whittier in the first round and will need to contain conference-leading base stealer Brianna Alvarez and the Poets' most prolific batsman, Marialena Ahern.

La Verne and Chapman square off in the other first round game. ULV's Alexis Schiff was recently named the conference's Athlete of the Year and is No. 4 nationally with 0.37 homeruns per game. For the Panthers, Michaela Foisy leads the team batting .373 and with 44 hits, 28 runs and 29 stolen bases.
