Comeback win in sweep of Oxy

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team earned two more wins in SCIAC play due to a shutout and then a comeback on Friday afternoon. The Athenas (16-12, 14-4) earned the sweep over Occidental College (9-19, 7-11) with scores of 7-0 and then 9-5. On the day, CMS out-hit the Tigers 23-10, led by sophomore Ande Troutman (CMC) with six hits and sophomore Chloe Amarilla (CMC) with four including a big three-run homer in the second game.

Game one started off with some excitement as CMS began with four consecutive hits. Sophomore Reeve Grobecker (CMC) and Troutman got on with a single and double and then both scored on singles by Amarilla and junior Carly Roleder (CMC). Junior Briana Halle (CMC) loaded the bases with an infield single while Amarilla and Roleder both escaped pickles on the play. Unfortunately, CMS was forced to leave runners in scoring position.

Gurr threw the complete game shutout and allowed just three Tiger hits in the first game.

CMS added five more runs in the seventh as freshman Kylie Hetzel (HMC) got the rally started with a pinch hit single. Troutman added her third hit of the game and then Halle earned a pair of RBIs to score Troutman and Amarilla. Halle herself came home on a wild pitch to give Gurr the 7-0 advantage in the bottom of the seventh.

The Athenas scored first in the night cap as well. Senior Alexa Heydenberk (CMC) led off the inning with a walk and then was ultimately scored by Troutman. Amarilla also earned her first RBI of the game when she scored freshman catcher Savannah Green (CMC).

Oxy scored its first run of the day in the third inning of the second game to come within one of the Athenas. Then, the Tigers took the 5-3 lead due to a four-run bottom of the fifth.

CMS quickly replied with another pair of singles by Grobecker and Troutman and then Amarilla smacked her first homer of the season over the left center fence. Roleder and Heydenberk each added a double to give CMS another run in the five-hit inning.

Gurr came in to close out the game as the Athenas are now on an eight-game winning streak.

Game 2 Box Score

CMS hosts La Verne in a double header (21-7, 14-4) tomorrow, April 15 beginning at 12 p.m. The Athenas and Leos are currently in a tie for first place in the SCIAC standings.
