Softball SCIAC Tournament Preview

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team earned the No. 2 seed going into the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament with a 24-4 record during regular season play. The University of La Verne posted a 25-3 record for the No. 1 seed and hosting privileges at the Campus West Softball Field. The final two teams to round out the tournament are No. 3 seed Redlands (16-12) and No. 4 seed Whittier (12-16).

The double elimination tournament will span two days – Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7 – and each team will play two games the first day. CMS faces off against Redlands on Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. The rest of the tournament schedule can be found on the Tournament Homepage. Directions to Campus West can be found here.

As this is a conference playoff event, admission will be charged as follows:

  • All SCIAC students, faculty, and staff with institutional ID: Free
  • Children 12 years of age and under: Free
  • General Admission: $10
  • Seniors (55+) and Military: $5

The tournament can be followed online via a video broadcast for a $10 fee per day (per SCIAC regulations) or for free with live stats.

La Verne claimed their first regular season championship since 2004 and have put together a 14 game winning streak. Athlete of the year Katherine Kibbe tops the SCIAC with 19 wins and has a 1.63 ERA while also hitting .345. Mackenzie Dutton and Alexis Schiff have combined for 19 home runs and 84 RBI.

CMS is the only team that has been in the SCIAC tournament since its installment in 2008 and won three consecutive tournaments in 2012, 2013 and 2014. The Athenas are led by SCIAC Pitcher of the Year, sophomore Anna Gurr (CMC) who sports a 1.13 ERA. Seniors Katie Savard (CMC) and Tara Robinson (CMC) and captain the infield and outfield and have .422 and .368 batting averages respectively. Robinson has the most hits in conference at 57.

The Bulldogs are led by AJ Carrasco who is hitting .491 with five home runs, 33 RBI, 43 runs scored and SCIAC-leading 24 stolen bases. She also has a perfect fielding percentage in conference play. Lindsey Mifsud (11-8, 2.22 ERA) tops the pitching staff.

The defending SCIAC Postseason Champion, Whittier, clinched a spot in the tournament on the last game of the season. The Poets lead the SCIAC with 32 home runs and 66 doubles, paced by regular season home run champion, Marialena Ahern at 13. Co-Newcomer of the year Kacey Whitney leads the conference with 16 doubles.
