Sweet sweep of Sagehens

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 7 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team completed the season sweep of Sixth Street rivals, Pomona-Pitzer, with the 5-0 and 3-0 shutouts on Saturday afternoon. This is the first time since the 2010 season that CMS has swept PP 4-0 in the regular season.

The Athenas scored early in game one, putting up two runs in each of the first two innings. Freshman Victoria Huynh (CMC) and senior Tara Robinson (CMC) put together another excellent day as table setters. They each singled and scored in the first inning to give CMS the 2-0 lead.

The next two runs came in the second as Huynh and Robinson each doubled and then were driven in by senior Katie Savard (CMC). Savard's second hit came in the top of the seventh to lead off the inning. She was driven in by sophomore Carly Roleder (CMC) for an added insurance run.

The Athena pitching duo of sophomore Anna Gurr (CMC) and senior Molly Rubidoux (CMC) continued to go about their business of dominating opposing hitters. Collectively in conference they have held batters to a mere .261 average and own a 1.2 ERA. Also, 14 of CMS' 26 wins have been shutouts.

The second game remained scoreless through three complete innings before the Athenas broke out in the top of the fourth. Sophomore designated player Briana Halle (CMC) doubled to lead off the inning. Her pinch runner, Elaine Wang (CMC) scored after a walk and then back-to-back singles by senior Carlene Roberts (CMC) and freshman Abigail Metsch (CMC). On an infield popup to second base for the second out, Roberts kept the fielders at second base preoccupied while pinch runner Sarah Whitney (CMC) managed to score.

The final run of the day was hit in by Halle in the seventh inning for her second double of the game, scoring Savard from first.

The defense, captained by Gurr and Rubidoux, held the Sagehens scoreless despite their 10 hits in game two. Gurr kept PP to two hits in game one and then came in for the save in game two, relieving Rubidoux after four and a third innings. The Athenas got out of a jam in the fifth inning with runners on first and third as right fielder Shannon O'Neill (CMC) came crashing in to catch a shallow foul popup for the third out.

Freshman Reeve Grobecker (CMC) combined for three hits while Savard led all hitters with four hits on the day.

Eight different Sagehens got hits in game two and pitcher Bianca Cockrell led the team with three hits spanning both games.

The Athenas remain at the top of SCIAC with a 19-2 record. Next weekend, CMS hosts Whittier (14-16, 6-12 SCIAC) on Saturday at 12 and 2 p.m. and then plays at La Verne on Sunday at 1 p.m. to
