Softball split with La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team took a split with the University of La Verne in the Saturday double header winning game one 8-0 in five innings and dropping the second game, 3-0. Sophomore Anna Gurr (CMC) threw eight innings over the two games and earned the win in the first.

The Athenas put together nine hits in the first game with three players tallying two each: senior Tara Robinson (CMC), sophomore Carly Roleder (CMC), and freshman Reeve Grobecker (CMC). CMS scored one run in each of the first two innings, kick-started by Roleder smacking a triple down the right field line to score Robinson.

Ultimately, CMS was successful at advancing runners into scoring position and then scored twice on wild pitches. The Athenas only left three runners on base and scored eight, abruptly ending the game in the fifth inning with only one out.

In the outfield, senior Janelle Shiozaki (CMC) made plays on three fly balls, including two that she chased down in foul territory.

The current SCIAC Athlete of the Week, Hayley Jaquess, got the best of the CMS hitters in the second game. She scattered three Athena hits over the seven innings.

The Leopards amassed three runs on three different Athena pitchers. First game starter, Gurr, came back in the circle for CMS in the fifth inning and struck out two consecutive batters.

On the day, Roleder accounted for 12 outs including eight assists. A defensive highlight of Roleder's was in the second game in the second inning. One of ULV's power hitters, Alexis Schiff, hit a ball deep in the five-six hole that Roleder fielded from her knees and then made the long throw across the diamond for the first out of the inning.

Another defensive gem in the second game was a throw from senior catcher Carlene Roberts (CMC) to catch a Leopard attempting to steal second base. This marks Roberts' first runner thrown out on the season.

The Athenas' (4-3-1, 3-1 SCIAC) next double header is at Cal Lutheran (7-4, 2-2 SCIAC) on Feb. 27.
