Softball team advances to second day of SCIAC Tournament after a pair of one run games

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team advances to the second and final day of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament after beating La Verne 6-5 in the first game and then losing to Whittier 1-0 in the night cap. The Athenas are three-time defending champions of the tournament and look to extend the streak to four in a row.

CMS faces Cal Lutheran on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in an elimination game with the winner advancing to face Whittier at 1:30 p.m. Cal Lu beat La Verne in the third game of the day at the Whittier softball field with a walk off hit by Liz Mertel.

CMS 6, La Verne 5 – Box Score

Carly Roleder led the Athenas from both sides of the ball in the first game for CMS. The game was tied 1-1 through four innings before Roleder hit a one out blast just barely over the centerfield fence to break the tie. Roleder came up again in the subsequent inning, this time with two outs and the bases loaded. Another, almost identical, shot broke the game open giving CMS the 6-2 lead going into the seventh inning. Defensively, Roleder recorded an outfield assist on a hot grounder through the right side and then made a diving catch, coming in on a sinking liner.

Anna Gurr pitched the entirety of the both games. In the first six innings of the day, she scattered six hits and only allowed one walk. The Leos made a run in the bottom of the seventh, putting up a couple runs from Athena defensive errors, but Gurr settled the defense and secured the win for CMS.

Whittier 1, CMS 0 – Box Score

In the second game of the day, the Athenas faced Whittier's ace pitcher, Samantha Blum, who threw a one-hitter. Katie Savard recorded the Athenas' only hit.

The most promising inning for CMS was the bottom of the fourth when Elaine Wang reached on a throwing error by the pitcher and then stole second base. Roleder walked behind her but ultimately both runners were stranded in scoring position.

Gurr pitched another complete game gem, allowing just four hits and the only run was unearned.
