Friday sweep of Ithaca

CLAREMONT, Calif. – During the hottest day in March thus far, the No. 16 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team swept Ithaca College (4-3 & 6-3), a strong program out of New York. The Bombers came out to Claremont on their last day of a weeklong SCIAC tour and proved to be an excellent test for the Athenas.

Game 1: CMS 4, Ithaca 3 – Box Score

Ithaca started out aggressive on the base paths, scoring in the first inning on a routine ground ball to the short stop. CMS answered in the bottom of the first as Tara Robinson scored on a two-out single by Katie Savard.

The Bombers blanked CMS for three innings before the Athenas put together a big fifth inning. Melanie Carlson led off and kept it simple with a single to right field, starting the rally. Carlson had earned her first start in right field in her career.

More singles by Tara Robinson and Carly Roleder loaded the bases for Brooklyn Robinson who walked to tie the game. Then, Alexa Heydenberk smacked a two RBI single for the Athenas to regain the lead.

The defense buckled down behind Anna Gurr in the top of the seventh when Ithaca threatened again. Gurr improves to 4-1 on the season with an ERA still below 2.00.

Game 2: CMS 6, Ithaca 3 – Box Score

Shannon O'Neill and Roleder led CMS in RBI in the second game, but Heydenberk and Carlene Roberts started it off in the first inning. Brooklyn Robinson and Savard got on with a walk and an error and then were each hit in to give the Athenas a two run lead.

Roleder earned hers in the fourth inning, ripping a double to score Elaine Wang and Chloe Rodman.

O'Neill came through for the Athenas in the fifth for her first RBI on the season with a bases loaded single.

Andrea Jewett earned her third win after pitching five innings, only allowing one run and striking out three.
