No-hitter contributes to softball sweep of Redlands

CLAREMONT, Calif. –The top two softball programs in SCIAC for the last five years met on Saturday for a double header. No. 14 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps earned the sweep with two wins over Redlands, 8-3 and 9-0 (5 inn.). This is the first sweep of the Bulldogs at home since 2011.

Freshman Briana Halle and sophomore Andrea Jewett combined for a no-hitter in the second game of the double header, a feat that has not been accomplished in at least two seasons of Athena Softball. Redlands was the most proficient hitting team in SCIAC last season with a team batting average of .341 in conference play during the regular season. During the game, the CMS defense played flawlessly behind its stellar pitching duo.

On the day, the Athenas only committed one error to Redlands' six. Aside from the freshman shortstop, Carly Roleder, the pitchers, Halle and freshman Anna Gurr were the busiest fielders, each with three assists.

Roleder had a stand-out day at the plate as well. In the first game, she led off the bottom of the first inning with a blast over the center field fence and then proceeded to go 4-for-4 in the game with double, three runs scored and two RBI.

Redlands got on the board early in the first game, putting up one run in the first and two in the second inning. CMS answered in each inning, doubling Redlands' score. After Roleder's homer, junior Mikayla O'Neal hit an RBI single to regain the lead. In the second inning, the Athenas strung together four hits, highlighted by junior Brooklyn Robinson's double that plated Roleder and the speedy Tara Robinson.

CMS topped the eight runs in the first game by scoring nine in the second. The Athenas rallied in the bottom of the second inning for six runs. Each of Tara Robinson, Brooklyn Robinson and O'Neal had multi-RBI hits in the inning.

On the day, Brooklyn Robinson led the team with five RBI followed closely by O'Neal who had four.

The Athenas currently have four hitters in the top 10 in SCIAC based on batting average: Roleder, Tara Robinson, Alexa Heydenberk and Brooklyn Robinson. CMS also has a team ERA below 2.00 and three pitchers in the top five in SCIAC: Gurr, Halle and Jewett.

For Redlands, Vicki King was the only Bulldog to have a multi-hit day with a single and a double in the first game. In the second game, Casey Maltz only allowed one run in 2.2 innings pitched.

CMS (8-2, 5-1) hosts Ithaca on Friday, Mar. 13 in a double header and then heads across the street for a matchup with Pomona-Pitzer (6-11, 2-6) the next day, Mar. 14.
