Consistent scoring yields sweep of Willamette

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team remains undefeated at home in its sweep of in-region opponent, Willamette. The Athenas won 6-1 and then 4-0 for their second shutout of the season.

Game 1: CMS 6, Willamette 1

In the first game of the day, each batter who stepped to the plate earned a hit and five different Athenas scored.

CMS got on the board in the first inning on consecutive two-out hits – a single by junior Brooklyn Robinson (SCR) and a triple by junior Katie Savard (CMC). Savard scored on Mikayla O'Neal's (CMC) hit that ricocheted off the pitcher.

In the next inning, Alexa Heydenberk (CMC) led off with a double and touched home on Janelle Shiozaki's (CMC) single up the middle.

The Athenas were able to capitalize on a Bearcat error in the third inning as junior catcher Carlene Roberts (CMC) came up clutch with a bases loaded, two RBI single. Junior Shannon O'Neill (CMC) loaded the bases again but the Athenas stranded all three baserunners to end the inning.

The scoring continued in the bottom of the sixth inning when freshman Carly Roleder (CMC) earned her second hit of the game with a flare to right field, plating the speedy Tara Robinson (CMC).

In the circle, freshman Anna Gurr (CMC) earned her first win allowing only one run in five innings pitched. Junior Molly Rubidoux (CMC) closed the game, getting the final six outs.

Game 2: CMS 4, Willamette 0

The Athenas were unable to get anything going in the first inning but then Roleder led off the second inning with a line drive shot over the left field fence. On the day, Roleder was an impressive 4-for-5 with three RBI.

CMS played excellent defense during the games, highlighted by Brooklyn Robinson's diving catch behind first base in the top of the third inning.

After a pitching change for Willamette in the fifth inning, Tara Robinson tallied her fourth hit as she beat out an infield grounder. Roleder got on base with a walk and then both runners were driven in a rocket double by O'Neal out to left field.

Sophomore Andrea Jewett (CMC) earned her second win of the year as she and freshman Briana Halle (CMC) combined for the shutout.

Box Score

Willamette was led by Myranda Ramirez who had three hits and a stolen base on the day.

Next weekend, the Athenas (5-1, 2-0 SCIAC) are on the road traveling out to Cal Lutheran (4-9, 4-3 SCIAC) and then down to Cal St. San Marcos (16-3).
