Heydenberk and Shiozaki ignite Athenas’ offense for two shutouts over Whittier

CLAREMONT, Calif. – After tough losses the day before, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team rebounded to beat Whittier twice in a Sunday make-up double header. Freshmen Alexa Heydenberk and Cassie Davis were big contributors to the Athenas' win in the second game while sophomore Janelle Shiozaki doubled to knock in the only CMS score in the first.

Prior to the games, CMS and Whittier were tied for third in SCIAC standings, both teams at 9-5 in conference play. Upon the completion of the day, CMS (11-5) sits squarely in second place behind Redlands (16-0).

Junior hurler Hayley Schultz pitched another dandy for her ninth win on the season. She struck out five, allowed only three hits, and recorded her fifth shutout this year.

The Athena bats were not quite as potent as they would be in the second game but rallied to earn the 1-0 win. CMS scored early in the game when sophomore Carlene Roberts reached first base safely after a wild pitch despite swinging at the third strike. Roberts was bunted over by senior Morgan Beltz and then scored on a double through the outfield by Shiozaki.

The Athenas had another chance in the fifth inning as the Whitter loaded up the bases by walking sophomore Katie Savard but Poets' senior pitcher Courtney DeLano stifled the Athenas' attack.

Behind Schultz, the defense effectively kept Whittier off the bases and the Poets had runners in scoring position just twice during the game.

In the second game of the day, freshmen Kaylilani Minami pitched all seven innings for her seventh complete game and sixth win on the year.

CMS started the scoring in the second inning as Davis singled to right center, knocking in Savard.

Savard was instrumental to the Athenas' run production as she got on base in all four of her plate appearances and personally scored two runs.

The Athenas put up four runs in the third inning, capitalizing on a middle infield miscue by the Poets followed by three two-out singles by Beltz, Shiozaki and Davis.

CMS capped off the game's scoring with a fourth inning lead-off homer by Heydenberk, the first of her collegiate career.

The Athenas improve to 16-9, 11-5 in SCIAC. CMS travels to Chapman this Saturday (4/5) to play the Panthers at 12 and 2 p.m.
