Athenas win game one but end up with split against La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team went 1-1 against La Verne in Saturday's home conference double header, winning the first game 2-0 but then falling 5-1 in the second. The Athenas look to improve on their SCIAC record (3-3) with double headers on Friday and Saturday this week against Cal Lutheran and Pomona-Pitzer.

Game 1: CMS 2, La Verne 0

CMS scored the only runs of the game in similar fashion to the wins over Chapman just two weeks ago. In the bottom of the third inning, the Athenas loaded the bases with singles by sophomores Tara Robinson and Brooklyn Robinson and a walk by Katie Savard. Two more sophomores, Mikayla O'Neal and Carlene Roberts were walked and hit by a pitch respectively to push two runs across the plate.

In the first game, second baseman Brooklyn Robinson was 4-4 at the plate and had three assists in the field including contributing to a 4-6-3 double play in the top of the fourth inning.

Junior pitcher Hayley Schultz recorded her second shutout and win for the season. She struck out four and had no walks.

Game 2: La Verne 5, CMS 1

After the win in game 1, the Athenas' defense came out strong in the first inning. A Leopard got on second base with a walk and a sacrifice bunt. Then, Athena third baseman senior Megan Latta caught a line drive and threw behind the runner for a double play to end the inning. CMS was unable to capitalize on the momentum swing and score in the bottom of the inning.

Some miscommunication and errors by the defense allowed La Verne to score their first two runs in the second inning.

The Leopards kept fighting and plated three more in the top of the seventh off to put them ahead 5-0.

CMS rallied in the bottom of the seventh and Tara Robinson scored off a single up the middle by Savard.

Three outs were recorded and the game ended before the Athenas could continue the comeback.

For La Verne, Raven Freret had three hits on the day and Jacklyn Duran batted in two runs in the top of the seventh with a two out double.

The Athenas are back in action this Friday (3/14) against Cal Lutheran at home (2 pm & 4 pm) and then travel across the street to play Sixth Street rivals, Pomona-Pitzer, in a double header on Saturday (12 pm & 2 pm).
