Stevie Steinberg Earns Second SCIAC Cross Country Athlete of Week Honor

CLAREMONT, Calif. - For the second time this season, junior Stevie Steinberg has captured the SCIAC Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week honor for events through Sunday, Sept. 29, the league office announced today.

Steinberg earned it this week after helping the Stags to their second straight first-place finish, winning The Master's Invitational on Saturday out of a field of 28 teams. CMS defeated the hosts from The Master's University, which came in second, and a five-runner contingent from UCLA, which came in third.

Steinberg was fourth out of over 300 runners in the race, breaking 25 minutes and finishing with a time of 24:48.1, behind only the individual champion from Westmont and two runners from UCLA. Steinberg also captured the SCIAC honor on Sept. 9 after opening up the season with a fifth-place finish at the Biola Invitational.

CMS, which is ranked No. 7 in the country, has now won the SCIAC Athlete of the Week honor in all four weeks it has competed. In addition to Steinberg's two wins, sophomore Kyril Van Schendel earned it in back-to-back weeks on Sept. 16 (after the UC Riverside Invitational) and Sept. 23 (after winning the Coyote Challenge).

The Stags will be back in action in two weeks when they travel to the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego on Oct. 12.
