CMS Men's Cross Country Comes in Third Place in First 2019 Meet

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's cross country team had a strong third-place finish at the Biola Invitational in its first meet of the 2019 season, with four runners finishing in the top 15 of a competitive field on Saturday morning at Ted Craig Regional Park.

CMS tallied 57 points at the meet and finished only behind CSU San Marcos (42 points) and host Biola (53) in a close three-way battle for first place. UC San Diego was a distant fourth with 115 points, followed by Academy of Art with 192 points. 

Junior Stevie Steinberg ran a 25:26.95 to finish in fifth place overall and lead the way for the Stags, with sophomore Kyril Van Schendel close behind in seventh place with a time of 25:27.57. Senior Thomas D'Anieri, who did not compete last fall while studying abroad after a top-100 finish at nationals as a sophomore, returned to the line-up with a strong effort, finishing 12th among college competitors with a 25:45.29, while sophomore Miles Christensen came in 14th with a 25:52.47. 

Junior Will Kimball capped off the top five scorers for CMS with a 25:56.01 to come in 19th place, giving the Stags five runners in the top 20. CMS also totaled eight runners in the top 30, with first-year Henry Pick (23rd, 26:02.71), senior Wilson Ives (25th, 26:02.95) and sophomore Adam Wilkinson (26th, 26:05.37) all running close behind the top five. 

Also in the top 50 in the race (of 193 competitors) were first-year Daniel Krasemann (32nd), first-year Will Wallace (38th), first-year Noah Battaglia (46th) and junior Daniel Sealand (47th). CMS had 10 other runners finish in the top 100 and earn their way into the top half of the field: Arjun Natarajan (52nd), Evan Hassman (62nd), Kai Dettman (66th), Alexander Hirsch (74th), Garrick Jensen (75th), Declan O'Neill (78th), Brooks MacDonald (80th), Noah Nevens (87th), Mihira Sogal (88th) and Kaito Komoriya (95th). 

The Stags also fielded a team of alumni to run in the race, with that group finishing the competition in fifth place. Jesse Joseph was the top finisher for the alums in eighth place, while Evan Moleinoux finished 17th. 

CMS will be back in action next weekend when it competes at the UC Riverside Invitational.
