Stags Cap Season with 29th Place Finish at Nationals

Eslah, Ill. - On a windy and damp Saturday morning, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's cross country team capped off the 2017 season with a run in the National Championships. The Stags finished in 29th overall (688 points) in the 32-team field. Kevin Huang (HMC) and Thomas D'Anieri (CMC) finished in the top 100, in 85th and 93rd, respectively, to lead the Stags.

North Central ran away with the team title, finishing with 57 team points. Wisconsin-Eau Claire came in second, 139 points behind with a team total of 196. Christopher Newport (221), Amherst (251), and Washington-St. Louis (269) rounded out the top five, finishing third through fifth.

In the individual race, Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Darin Lau crossed the line first to claim the title in a time of 24:12.44. Lau crossed ahead of a pair of North Central runners, Jared Borowsky (24:12.44) and Dhruvil Patel (24:14.15). The duo finished in second and third to anchor the Cardinals' team victory. RPI's Grant O'Connor (24:19.35) and Christopher Newport's Grayson Reid (24:20.60) rounded out the top-five.

For the Stags, Kevin Huang led the charge with a time of 25:25.23 to finish in 85th place and earn 56 team points for CMS. Just two second behind Huang was Thomas D'Anieri with a time of 25:27.74. D'Anieri finished in 93rd place and earned 63 team points for the Stags.

Kyle Suver (HMC) was the third Stag to cross the line. He finished in a time of 26:20.46 in 229th place. Stephen Steinberg (HMC) followed 22 seconds behind Suver with a time of 26:43.00 to place 248th in the 279-runner field.

Max Denning (HMC) and Charlie Harris (CMC) went back-to back in times of 26:47.27 and 26:47.50. The duo finished in 253rd and 254th, respectively.

Adam Schulze (HMC) rounded out the CMS effort with a time of 28:11.92 in the race.

The National Championship Meet wraps up a 2017 season that saw the Stags claim three first-place titles in races during the regular season. In the postseason, CMS earned a pair of third-place finishes in both the SCIAC Championships and the NCAA West Regional.
