D'Anieri and Huang Lead Stags to Third Place at Regionals

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 27 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's cross country team finished third in the team standings of Saturday's NCAA West Regional. The Stags finished with a team score of 103 to trail, second-place UC Santa Cruz (90 points) by 13. Pomona-Pitzer had four of the top ten finishers to win the team title with a score of 35.

Thomas D'Anieri (CMC) led the Stags with a seventh-place finish in a time of 25:31.50. Senior Kevin Huang (HMC) placed 11th to ensure his spot in next weekend's National Championship. Both D'Anieri and Huang have, at the very least, claimed their spot as individuals in the final race of the season.

Finishing back-to-back were teammates and fellow Harvey Mudders, Kyle Suver (HMC) and Stephen Steinberg (HMC). The duo finished in 24th and 25th respectively with times of 26:19.35 and 26:2057. They were neck and neck down the final stretch, but the senior Suver got the better of his freshman teammate Steinberg in the final 100 meters.

Just outside the top-35 was Max Denning (HMC) crossing the line in 36th-place in a time of 26:41.96. He rounded out the scoring for the Stags on the morning. Adam Schulze (HMC) and Charlie Harris (CMC) displaced points by finishing in 45th and 48th. Schulze finished in a time of 26:55.66 while Harris was less than 15 seconds later in a time of 27:09.42.

As mentioned, D'Anieri and Huang have secured spots at the National Championship next weekend thanks to their strong finishes on Saturday.

The Stags will now wait and see if they are chosen as an at-large selection to the NCAA National Championships in St. Louis, Mo. next weekend. The National Championship field will be announced Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. be on the lookout for coverage at CMSathletics.org this weekend.
