Riverside, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps cross country programs finished within the top 10 at the UC Riverside Invitational this past Saturday. The Stags took seventh place in the 8K event out of 22 teams with a combined score of 201 and finishing with an average time of 25:28.28. The Athenas on the other hand finished in 10th at the 5K event with a combined score of 226 and average time of 19:17.89. The Athenas also took ninth at the 6K event and was the highest finisher among non-DI schools with a score of 90 and average time of 21:40.06.
Senior Joshua Sealand (HMC) led the Stags with the highest finish, placing in 17th with a time of 24:51.72. Sealand's time moved him to No. 10 All-Time for CMS in the 8K event. Senior Kyle Lund (HMC) was the second highest finisher, taking 29th with a time of 25:12.21 while senior Jesse Joseph (HMC) took 51st with a time of 25:34.89. Overall four Stags finished below 26 minutes and 13 finished under 27 minutes, with 11 runners setting a new personal record. Although the Stags finished 2 points behind DIII #6 Pomona-Pitzer, the team was missing their top frosh runner, Thomas D'Anieri (CMC).
For the Athenas, five runners in the 5K open set new PRs, including junior Roselyn Cantu (CMC) who finished at 19:02.10 and sophomore Matilda Msall (SC) at 19:15.37. Six runners broke their PRs at the 6K event. Junior Bryn McKillop (SC) was third overall with a record-breaking time of 20:47.94, breaking prior record holder Jen Tave's mark of 20:51.8. Senior Carmen Mejia (SC) finished in 17th with a time of 21:26.12, putting her sixth all-time in the CMS record book.
CMS will run again on Sept. 24 at the Coyote Invitational in San Bernardino, CA at 8:00 a.m. Last season, the men took second place at the event while the women finished in third.
