CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo program will serve as one of the hosts of the annual Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament this Friday and Saturday at Axelrood Pool.

Pomona-Pitzer, La Verne and Occidental will also serve as hosts of the two-day event, which features a total of 27 men's water polo programs from across the country, playing in 47 matches across four different venues, with 15 of them taking place at Axelrood Pool.

CMS will be in action twice on Friday and twice on Saturday at home, opening up against Navy on Friday at 12:45 p.m. and then facing Johns Hopkins at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Stags will meet Washington & Jefferson at 12:45 p.m. and Pepperdine at 4:30 p.m.

The Stags have met several of its opponents in thrilling games in previous Gary Troyer Tournaments before the pandemic. In 2018, CMS won a 6-5 game against Navy on a goal with three seconds left, with current senior Rob Driscoll throwing the game-winning skip pass to Ethan Lewis. The Stags also dropped a 14-13 decision to Pepperdine at the 2018 Troyer that came right down to the wire, with the Waves breaking the tie on their final possession. The Stags defeated Johns Hopkins 12-8 in 2018, before the Blue Jays came back in 2019 to earn a hard-fought 9-8 win (CMS would avenge that loss later that season at the USA Water Polo Division III Championships).

Navy and Pepperdine will be the fourth and fifth different Division I programs to face CMS at Axelrood Pool this fall. At the Inland Empire Classic on Sept. 11-12, the Stags battled Long Beach State, USC and UC Irvine.
