CMS Men's Water Polo Closes Out Regular Season with 14-3 Win Over Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team scored the game's first eight goals and went on to capture a 14-3 win over Caltech in its regular season finale on Saturday at Braun Pool.

With the win, CMS concludes the regular season at 16-10 overall and 11-3 in SCIAC play, earning the right to host the SCIAC Semifinals on Friday night against Pomona-Pitzer. The two teams tied for second place in the regular season and split with each other, with each team winning by a goal. The next tiebreaker was record against the first-place team (Whittier), who CMS was 1-1 against and Pomona-Pitzer was 0-2. 

CMS took a 5-0 lead into intermission behind two goals and an assist from sophomore Will Clark in the first 16 minutes. Senior Ethan Lewis started the scoring, and junior CJ Box added a goal to make it a 2-0 lead. Clark then scored two straight, befire sophomore Eric Warmoth closed out the first half scoring to make it a 5-0 lead. 

Junior Christian Thornton started the second half with a goal, and Clark finished off his hat trick to help make it 8-0 before the Beavers got on the board. Sophomore Andrew Wraith and first-year Noah Weldon each tacked on a pair of second-half goals for the Stags. 

CMS will next host Pomona-Pitzer for the second time in a little over a week after the Sagehens took a 10-9 sudden death overtime win at Axelrood Pool on Wedneday, winning after Zack Rossman tied the score with only two seconds left. The Stags won the first meeting at Pomona-Pitzer 9-8, with a late goal from Lewis proving to be the game-winner.
