Late Run Seals Victory Over Tigers

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – On Wednesday afternoon the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team handed the Occidental Tigers a 15-10 loss in Taylor Pool. Christian Thornton (CMC) scored four goals on just four shots to lead five Stags with multiple goals in the victory for CMS.

Ethan Lewis (CMC) made seven saves in goal to secure the win.

 The Stags held a slim 5-4 lead at the half before exploding for eight goals in the third period to open up a 13-7 lead heading into the final period. Eric Thvedt (CMC) scored just over a minute into the third period to get things going for the Stags. The Tigers scored just moments later to keep it a one goal game.

After Thornton and Occidental's Walter Sandbloom traded goals in a 20 second span, Thornton connected with 4:17 remaining in the period to start an 8-1 run for the Stags that lasted for the next eight minutes.

During the stretch four different Stags scored including two goals each from Thornton and Barron Banta (CMC). Zack Rossman (CMC) scored the final three goals of the run to make it a 15-7 game.

The tigers connected on three late tallies in the final four minutes of the match, but it was not enough and the Stags took the 15-10 victory.

With the win, CMS moves to 11-14 on the season and 6-5 in the SCIAC. The Stags will travel to La Verne to take on the Leopards on Saturday morning for a game at 11:00 a.m.
