Sagehens Top Stags in Sixth Street Showdown

POMONA, Calif. – Two goals in the opening minute by Graham Fullerton (CMC) and Zack Rossman (CMC) gave the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team an early 2-0 against their sixth street rival, Pomona-Pitzer. The early goals were not enough as the Sagehens went on for the 11-5 victory.

After CMS scored on their first two possessions, the Sagehens connected to pull within one at 2-1. A goal from Nick Britt (CMC) halfway through the opening period gave the Stags a 3-1 lead, but Pomona-Pitzer scored the final three goals of the period to take a 4-3 lead eight minutes into the match.

A slow second period saw the Sagehens tally two goals to take a 6-3 lead into the half.

After the break, Pomona-Pitzer scored the first two goals of the second-half to open up a five-goal lead. Noah Deer (CMC) got on the board with a goal at the end of the third period to end the streak of seven-straight tallies for the Sagehens. Pomona-Pitzer scored three more at the start of the fourth period. Barron Banta (CMC) netted a shot in the final moments of the contest, but it was not enough as the Sagehens won 11-5.

Pomona-Pitzer took advantage of their limited powerplay moments, scoring on three of their four opportunities. The Stags went 1-9 on their powerplay chances in the match.

The Sagehens and Stags finished even in shots with 28 apiece.

CMS falls to 3-5 overall and 1-1in the SCIAC. The Stags will next be in action on Friday when they travel to Cal Baptist to take on the Lancers (4:00 p.m.) and Occidental (6:40 p.m.).
