CMS Claims 10th-Straight SCIAC All-Sports Trophy

For the 10th-straight year and 30th time in program history, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athletic Department claimed the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s Combined All-Sports Trophy. The Athenas earned 94 points this season and won the All-Sports Trophy on the women’s side by a 19-point margin, claiming their eighth-straight and 23rd overall. The Stags finished third in the standings on the men’s side with 65.5 points. Pomona-Pitzer won the men’s All-Sports Trophy.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s water polo team dropped their SCIAC Semifinal match against the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on Friday night 13-10 to end the 2017 season. The Sagehens jumped all over the Stags in the first-half, but CMS hung tough and made it a game late thanks to five fourth quarter goals, but it was not enough as the Stags fell in the end.

On Thursday morning, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced the 2017 men’s water polo All-SCIAC teams. Among those honored were a trio of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps athletes. Senior Noah Deer (CMC) and sophomore Zack Rossman (CMC) earned First Team accolades, while senior Peter Tilton (CMC) was honored with a Second Team nod.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s water polo team ended the 2017 regular season in dramatic fashion to earn a spot in the SCIAC Tournament. CMS needed to win its final four games of the season to claim the four seed in the upcoming Conference Tournament. The Stags will make the short walk across the street to take on top-seeded Pomona-Pitzer at 7:00 p.m. in Haldeman Pool. In the other SCIAC Semifinal, the Whittier Poets will host the Chapman Panthers at 7:00 p.m. The winners of the two Semifinal matches will square off on Sunday of the highest remaining seed for the SCIAC Championship.

Having already clinched a spot in next weekend’s SCIAC Tournament, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s water polo team doubled up the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen to end the regular season on Saturday morning. The Stags took a 5-3 lead into the half before shutting out the Kingsmen in the third period to take an 8-3 lead into the fourth before winning by the five-goal margin.

In a must win game for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s water polo team on Wednesday night, the Stags turned in one of their finest performances of the season to beat the Redlands Bulldogs 11-8. Seven different Stags scored in the team effort victory. Zack Rossman (CMC) scored four goals to lead the CMS offense while Ethan Lewis (CMC) made five saves and collected three steals to help the Stags into the conference tournament.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s water polo team scored nine goals in the second-half to top the La Verne Leopards on Saturday morning 12-7. Five different Stags scored two goals apiece in the game and Ethan Lewis (CMC) made 12 saves to help CMS to their second-straight victory.

On Wednesday afternoon the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s water polo team handed the Occidental Tigers a 15-10 loss in Taylor Pool. Christian Thornton (CMC) scored four goals on just four shots to lead five Stags with multiple goals in the victory for CMS. Ethan Lewis (CMC) made seven saves in goal to secure the win.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s water polo took to Axelrood Pool on Saturday for a pair of matches. First up it was the No. 16 Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens taking the short walk across the street for the Sixth Street Rivalry Match. The Stags held a lead in the fourth-quarter, but could not hold on and the Sagehens earned the 6-5 victory. In the second match of the day, the No. 8 Pepperdine Wave took out the Stags 18-8.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s water polo team held the Whittier Poets scoreless over the final period on Thursday night, but could not complete the comeback. The Stags fell 8-7 in a gripping match in Axelrood Pool.After Noah Deer (CMC) scored the matches’ first goal, the Poets went on to take a 6-2 lead after 11 minutes of play. Facing an uphill battle, the Stags clawed their way back and early in the third period trimmed the lead to just one at 6-5.

Panthers Edge Stags in Overtime Tilt

Chapman’s Hunter Ramaekers scored twice in the second overtime period to help push the Chapman Panthers past the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s water polo team on Tuesday by a 12-9 final. Zack Rossman (CMC) led the Stags’ offensive effort on the evening with five goals and an assist.
