Senior day win over Caltech keeps Stags in the hunt

CLAREMONT, Calif. – With the 16-6 win over Caltech on Senior Day for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team, the Stags are still in contention for the SCIAC title. Prior to the game, the five Stag seniors were honored and adorned with customary leis: Ellison Taylor (CMC), Alex Waggoner (CMC), Eric Bakar (CMC), Rye Newman (CMC) and Nick Bailey (HMC).

The Stags came out on fire, putting in seven goals in the first period. Waggoner got things going with the first goal from a penalty shot on the first possession. Caltech came back with a goal by Charles Ross for the only tied score of the game at 1-1.

Waggoner scored one more and then passed on offensive opportunities to Taylor, Zack Rossman (CMC), Graham Fullerton (CMC) and Eric Thvedt (CMC).

Junior Noah Deer (CMC) won the sprint in each of the first two quarters to start the ball in the Stags' hands. CMS added to their substantive lead with five more goals in the second and four more in the third.

All told, Rossman led the team with three goals in the game while junior Arya Nakhjavani (CMC) recorded seven shots.

In the fourth quarter, Rye Newman tried his hand as a field player and had two attempts on goal while his younger brother Brett Newman (CMC) made three saves in the cage. Sophomore Evan Pauletich (CMC) also saw time as the goalie, playing the entire third quarter and recording two saves.

Box Score

With that as the final game in the regular season, CMS (14-15, 6-2 SCIAC) returns to the pool for the SCIAC Championships Nov. 18-20. The Championships will be hosted by Caltech at Pasadena City College on those days. More details will be released early next week.
