Big third quarter for win over Chapman

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Junior Noah Deer (CMC) scored five goals en route to the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team 13-11 victory over Chapman University on Wednesday night. The Stags put together a six-goal third quarter to break the tie and bring home their fourth SCIAC win.

The first half appeared fairly even on the stat sheet. Deer and freshman Zack Rossman (CMC) connected on two occasions. Rossman ended up with three assists on the night, all in the first quarter. Also scoring for CMS were freshman Ethan Lewis (CMC) and senior Eric Bakar (CMC). For Chapman, Corey Plaster notched two goals including a penalty.

The second quarter saw just two goals total as CMS went into halftime with the 5-4 lead.

The Stags came out of the break and scored back-to-back goals to start the third quarter, these by Deer and Rossman. Deer put in two more in the quarter as senior Rye Newman (CMC) made a timely save at the end of the quarter.

CMS led 11-8 at the start of the fourth quarter. The teams traded goals for the remainder of the game despite Chapman's best efforts to hurry up the game to regain possession.

Deer also led with eight shots and Newman recorded seven saves in the game.

With the win, CMS improves to 12-13 overall, 4-1 in SCIAC. The Stags host non-conference opponent Air Force on Sunday, Nov. 6 at Axelrood Pool.
