Stags overwhelmed in road loss to USC

Los Angeles, CA - Thursday night's road trip to the Uytengsu Aquatics Center proved to be difficult for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team (10-13, 2-1) as they took a brutal 22-2 loss to University of Southern California (17-1). The Stags were simply outmatched by the No. 3 Division I program in the nation as only junior Noah Deer (CMC) and senior Ellison Taylor (CMC) managed to find the back of the net. Matteo Morelli and Grant Stein had a career-night, as both Trojans scored their 100th career goal for the program. Morelli and Marin Dasic each had a hat-trick, while their goalie McQuin Baron had seven saves. Senior Rye Newman (CMC) had a busy day, recording nine saves.

The Trojans jumped off to a hot start, scoring four straight goals in the first period, three of which came on even strength. Deer managed to notch an unassisted goal with eight seconds left to cut the lead 4-1.

The Division I program pulled away in the second period to deny the Stags any shot of an upset, scoring seven goals in that entire period to take the 11-1 lead. James Walters managed to score two goals and an assist during this dominant run.

The Stags struggled to contain the USC offense in the following two periods, but Taylor managed to score a consolation goal with 4:55 left in the fourth period as USC led 18-2.

CMS will continue head back to Los Angeles again on Saturday, Oct. 29 as they resume conference play against Occidental College at 11 a.m.
