Newman saves 10 as Stags take CLU

CLAREMONT, Calif. – For its second win in SCIAC, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team pulled away in the second half to beat Cal Lutheran 10-7 on Saturday morning. Senior Rye Newman (CMC) made 10 saves, including on a penalty, to lead his team to the victory at home.

Despite the Kingsmen getting on the board first, CMS put up three goals in the initial period to take a one-goal lead.

Two of CMS' goals in the first quarter were in power play opportunities. The Stags were effective at capitalizing on six-on-five plays, scoring in three of six chances during the game. The Kingsmen were less successful, only scoring on two of 11 power plays, as CMS recorded almost twice the exclusions of CLU.

The Stags spread the scoring around during the game with five players each at a pair of scores. Seniors Alex Waggoner (CMC) and Ellison Taylor (CMC) scored both of theirs in the first half. Freshman Zack Rossman (CMC) came on strong in the second half and took the most shots for the Stags at seven in the game. CMS out-shot CLU 35 to 21.

After taking the 2-1 lead early in the first period, the closest CLU got to the Stags was 7-5 at 2:16 in the third quarter before CMS stretched its lead out to three and, on two occasions, four goals.

Next up for CMS (10-12, 2-1 SCIAC) is a road trip to Occidental (3-14, 0-3 SCIAC) next Saturday, Oct. 29 at 11 a.m.
