Big fourth quarter takes CMS past LMU

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Avoiding overtime, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team came from behind to pull out a 14-13 victory over Loyola Marymount on Friday afternoon. The Stags rallied past the Lions with five goals in the fourth quarter and then played superb defense to hold onto the lead at the end.

Loyola Marymount stunned CMS with the 3-0 lead in the first three minutes but the Stags put together a stronger second quarter, tying up the game at 4-4 with a goal by freshman Ethan Lewis (CMC) with 2:21 remaining in the first half.

LMU tacked on a trio of goals again at the beginning of the third quarter putting them up 9-6. Then, junior Noah Deer (CMC) scored his first goal of the game at the 3:31 mark of the third. Deer went on to score four goals within nine minutes of clock time.

The game was tied five times overall, three times in the fourth quarter alone. Senior Ellison Taylor (CMC) netted a goal to tie the game at 11-11; then Eric Bakar (CMC) tied it up at 12-12. Finally, Deer threw in his fourth to knot up the game at 13-13. Senior Alex Waggoner (CMC) scored just his second goal of the game but it came at the timeliest of moments to give CMS its first and only lead of the day.

Up 14-13, the Stags played two possessions of great defense to end the game at the same score.

The win set up CMS (8-11) well for the upcoming SCIAC season, starting with La Verne on Sunday at 11 am. Despite being an away game, it will be played at Axelrood Pool.
