Stags come up short against No. 16 Lancers

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team faced off against California Baptist University in the Lancers' home opener on Friday afternoon and came up short in the 18-9 loss. The Stags kept the game close through the first quarter but then the well-organized CBU put together 13 goals in 16 minutes of clock time in the middle of the game.

Scoring first for the Stags was senior Alex Waggoner (CMC) who was assisted by senior Ellison Taylor (CMC). Two minutes later, junior Peter Tilton (CMC) brought the game within one goal to finish the first quarter trailing 3-2.

The Lancers scored seven in the second quarter and six goals in the third quarter to run away with the game. Leaders for CBU were Thomas Henline, Bret Teraoka, and Dominick Nevarez each with a trio of goals.

CMS was led by Waggoner with four goals and senior Eric Bakar (CMC) at three, including finding the back of the net twice within 40 seconds of clock time at the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth. Also scoring for CMS was freshman Ethan Lewis (CMC) for his seventh on the seaason. In goal, senior Rye Newman (CMC) made seven saves and one steal.

The Stags fall to 3-8 overall but are currently ranked No. 2 in Division III by Collegiate Water Polo. CMS will return to Riverside next Friday, Sept. 30 to play Fresno Pacific and CBU again in the Lancer Invite.
