CMS gets by Chapman to set up showdown against Whittier for SCIAC title

LA VERNE, Calif. – For the fourth year in a row, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team is facing Whittier in the finals of the SCIAC Championships, after CMS defeated Chapman 11-6 in the semifinals on Nov. 21. CMS and Whittier face off on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 3 p.m. Whittier has defeated CMS for the SCIAC Championship the last two seasons, but CMS has won both matches this year.

Against Chapman, the teams were tied 2-2 after the first quarter, but CMS put three goals on the board in the second quarter and held Chapman scoreless. Sophomore attacker Peter Tilton (CMC) gave CMS a 3-2 advantage just eight seconds into the second quarter and CMS led the rest of the match.

Junior attacker Alex Waggoner (CMC) had a match-high five goals while junior goalie Rye Newman (CMC) turned away 14 Chapman shots, including eight in the fourth quarter. Senior attacker Daniel Cogan (CMC) was the other Stag with multiple goals. Willis Allen scored two goals to lead Chapman.

CMS defeated Whittier 16-14 in the Gary Troyer Tournament D-III finals and then again 14-13 on Nov. 4. Both matches were at CMS' Axelrood Pool.
