Top seeded Stags kick off SCIAC Championships with a win

LA VERNE, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team came into the SCIAC Championships as the number one seed and showed everyone why they earned that ranking with a 19-10 shellacking of Occidental.

The Tigers opened up the scoring with a bullet from the right side but CMS went on a 9-1 run to close out the half 9-2. Seniors Tanner Cullen (CMC), Daniel Cogan (CMC) and sophomore Noah Deer (CMC) each scored twice in the first half.

The Stags stayed aggressive by scoring four more including two from Alex Waggoner (CMC), but the Tigers answered with two quick goals by Matt Munet and Matt Weiser to close out third quarter, 13-4.

Waggoner's sidearm shot skipped past Oxy's Adam Florsheim to give CMS a double-digit lead but Paul Bergevin answered twice in a row to put the Tigers within eight at 14-6. William Kim scored his second goal of the game to cut the lead to nine followed by a converted penalty shot by Bergevin, but CMS's cushion proved too large for the Tigers to overcome.

Waggoner finished with four goals for the Stags, Bergevin had four to lead the Tigers.

19 goals ties the Stags' single game season high scoring total. CMS beat Caltech by the same 19-10 score on Oct. 31.

The Stags will move on to face the fourth-seeded Chapman Panthers Nov. 21 at 11:30 a.m. at Las Flores Park in La Verne. CMS won the only prior meeting between the two schools this season, a 13-9 decision where the Stags quickly jumped out in front 6-0 and never surrendered the lead.
