No. 1 CMS continues to look the part in Sixth Street win
CLAREMONT, Calif. – A run of five-straight goals in the first quarter by the Division III No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team gave CMS a large early cushion as the team went on to a 12-7 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Nov. 11 at the Haldeman Aquatic Center. CMS enters next week's SCIAC Championships at La Verne as the top seed, with an 8-0 SCIAC record. The win over the Sagehens also gave CMS (18-7), its 18th win of the year, the program's most since 1997 when CMS won 20 matches.
On Wednesday night, CMS stormed out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter with two of the scores coming from junior attacker Alex Waggoner (CMC). Pomona-Pitzer scored its first goal of the match with 33 seconds left in the first quarter when Neil Forsythe found the back of the net.
Both defenses were the story in the second quarter as the lone goal scored came when CMS sophomore attacker Peter Tilton (CMC) pushed the lead to 6-1 with 5:06 before halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer came out and made a push in the third quarter with a 4-1 run which narrowed the CMS advantage to just two goals near the end of the third quarter. With 10 seconds left in the third quarter, senior attacker Tanner Cullen (CMC) gave the Stags an 8-5 lead. His goal started a 4-0 run which put the match out of reach for Pomona-Pitzer as CMS moved ahead 11-5 with 2:31 remaining in the match.
All match long, CMS junior goalie Rye Newman (CMC) turned away Pomona-Pitzer as he came up with 15 saves. Cullen scored a match-high three goals for CMS and three other players had multiple goals. Phillip Clayman led Pomona-Pitzer with two scores.
