Strong first quarter leads Stags to win over Bulldogs

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team got off to a hot start against Redlands with a five goal first quarter. The 8-5 win means that the Stags remain undefeated against SCIAC opponents and still sit in first place in the conference with a 4-0 SCIAC (14-7 overall) record.

CMS controlled the opening sprint and scored on their first possession. The quick marker set the tone for the lopsided 5-1 frame. Junior Alex Waggoner (CMC) scored four of the five, the highest single-quarter goal total of any Stag this season.

A back-and-forth second saw both teams find the back of the cage twice. Eric Bakar (CMC) put the Stags up 6-3 before Waggoner added his fifth of the match.

Senior Tanner Cullen (CMC) made it an 8-3 game midway through the third, and goalie Rye Newman made three saves in the period including one right at the buzzer.

Redlands scored two quick goals to make the game interesting in the fourth quarter but Newman and the Stags defense held strong the rest of the way.

Waggoner is now the Stags second-leading goal scorer in SCIAC matches with nine markers through four contests.

The CMS men's water polo team is currently on a 10 match winning streak, dating back to Oct. 2.

The Stags will look to make it a perfect month at Caltech on Oct. 31, followed by a key home match against Whittier, the only other unbeaten SCIAC school, on Nov. 4.
