Dominant third quarter keeps CMS perfect in conference

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Up 6-4 at halftime, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team asserted itself on offense and defense in the third quarter to pull away for a 14-7 win over Occidental on Oct. 24 at Axelrood Pool. The win, its ninth in a row, keeps CMS perfect in SCIAC play at 3-0 and improved the team's record to 13-7 overall. The last time CMS won nine matches in a row was in 2013 when its win streak hit 10 matches.

In the decisive third quarter, CMS outscored Occidental 5-0. Senior attacker Tanner Cullen (CMC) scored two of his match-high five goals in the third period. 14 seconds into the third period he gave CMS a 7-4 lead. A minute and a half later, Cullen scored another goal to extend his team's advantage. Junior attacker Alex Waggoner (CMC), junior Eric Bakar (CMC) and freshman utility Peter Seidner (CMC) also scored in the quarter for CMS to stretch the score out to 11-4.

Occidental couldn't put a dent into the score in the fourth quarter as both teams scored three goals. Cullen scored two of CMS' goals in the fourth period as well.

Waggoner added three goals for CMS while Occidental's Paul Bergevin scored a team-high three goals in the match. Junior goalie Rye Newman (CMC) turned away Oxy with 10 saves in the match.

CMS hosts Redlands on Oct. 28, travels to Caltech on Oct. 31 and then hosts Whittier on Nov. 4 in a crucial conference match for Senior Day.
