Big overtime win for Stags over Cal Baptist

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In a single game matchup against California Baptist University on Friday night, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team edged out the Lancers 12-11 in overtime.

The games against Cal Baptist have always been close. In the 2014 season, the Stags came up just short losing 11-10 while in 2013, CMS was victorious 13-11.

The only time the Stags trailed this time was with the score at 2-1 with 5:28 left in the first quarter. The rest of the game saw CMS with a slight lead or at a tie.

The largest lead for CMS was at 5-2 late in the second quarter. Senior Tanner Cullen (CMC) found the back of the net with 1:21 on the clock to give the Stags the three goal advantage. The Lancers fired right back to cut the score to 5-3 going into halftime.

Also scoring in the first half were junior Ellison Taylor (CMC), earning the first goal of the game, and seniors Daniel Cogan (CMC) and Eric Bakar (CMC).

Cullen went on to score four goals in the match, each in a different period. Bakar also scored four times including the game-winner in the second overtime. While not as prolific a goal-scorer as Cullen, Bakar came up big for the Stags for their 12th score of the game within the final minute of the second overtime period.

Also contributing to the offensive efforts was freshman Peter Seidner (CMC), tagging one goal at the end of the third quarter. Thirteen of CMS' shots were saved by CBU's tenacious goalie Joseph Moorman.

The Stags (4-6) next face UCLA on Saturday, Sept. 26 and then are co-hosts of the annual Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament Oct. 2-3 when CMS plays Penn St. Behrend, Johns Hopkins and Fresno Pacific.
