Pair of victories for CMS over D-I opponents highlights Brown Invite
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In their first tournament of the year, the CMS men's water polo team traveled on Sept. 5 and 6 to Brown University to play five non-conference games. The Stags went 2-3 for the weekend, facing Brown, George Washington, and Bucknell on Saturday, Sept. 5 and MIT and Harvard on Sunday, Sept. 6. CMS lost 8-7 to Brown, won 15-9 against George Washington, won 14-9 against Bucknell, lost 14-11 to MIT, and lost 12-10 to Harvard. CMS is 2-3 on the season and next play UC San Diego and Pepperdine at the UCLA Invite on Sept. 12.
Brown 8, CMS 7
CMS fell to NCAA Division I No. 11 Brown on Saturday in a competitive non-conference game. The Stags came out strong, with four goals from four different players throughout the first quarter. They held the Bears to just one goal, dominating the first quarter 4-1.
The Stags stumbled in the second quarter, allowing the Bears to score three unanswered goals to tie the game. Going into halftime the score was 4-4.
In the third, CMS outscored Brown 3-2. Seniors Tanner Cullen (CMC) and Daniel Cogan (CMC), and junior Eric Bakar (CMC) each found the net for a second time, allowing the Stags to hold on to a one-goal advantage going into the third with a score of 7-6.
Brown tied the game within the first thirty seconds of the fourth, bringing the score even at 7-7. The Stags were unable to convert multiple man-up advantages, and the Bears scored within the last two seconds on a timeout play. The final score was 8-7 in favor of Brown.
Cullen, Bakar, and Cogan each contributed two goals, with sophomore Peter Tilton (CMC) scored one.
CMS 15, George Washington 9
CMS played their second match on Saturday against George Washington, winning 15-9. In the first quarter, seniors Cullen and Adam Hilborn (CMC) each scored once within the first few minutes of the game. The Colonials responded with two goals of their own, tying the game 2- 2 going into the second quarter.
The Stags took the advantage in the second quarter after Cullen single handedly outscored the Colonials 3-2. This tilted the score in favor of CMS going into halftime 6-4.
After halftime, CMS dominated the third quarter. Cullen added two goals, with freshman Peter Seidner (CMC) scoring his first career goal, and Hilborn and Bakar contributing one each. Junior goalie Rye Newman (CMC) had five saves in the third, holding the Colonials to just one goal. The Stags went into the fourth quarter up 11-5.
The two teams traded goals in the fourth quarter, each scoring four. Cullen and Cogan scored two each, solidifying the advantage created in the third quarter and ending the game 15-9.
Cullen scored a game high eight goals, Hilborn and Cogan each contributing two, and Bakar and Seidner each with one.
CMS 14, Bucknell 9
CMS took on Bucknell for their third match of the day, winning 14-9. The Stags began with a dominant first quarter, outscoring the Bison 4-0 with three goals from Cullen and one from junior Ellison Taylor (CMC).
Bucknell picked up the intensity in the second quarter, challenging CMS by finding the net three times. Six Stags responded, with Cullen, Hilborn, Bakar, Cogan, as well as sophomores Graham Fullerton (CMC) and Noah Deer (CMC), scoring one goal each to bring the score to 10-3 at half.
The Bison were persistent, and continued to challenge the Stags into the third quarter. Cullen and Fullerton each found the net once, but for the first time in this match CMS was outscored 3-2 while maintaining an overall advantage of 12-6.
Going into the quarter with a measurable lead, the Stags were able to put two more points on the board with goals from Bakar and Taylor. Bucknell outscored CMS 3-2, but was unable to overcome the advantage created in the first half. The Stags beat the Bison with a final score of 14-9.
Cullen scored a game high of five goals, with Taylor, Fullerton, and Bakar scoring two, and Cogan, Hilborn, and Deer each contributing one.
Cullen led the Stags for the day with fifteen goals, followed by Cogan and Bakar with five each, Hilborn with three, Taylor and Fullerton with two each, and Deer, Tilton, and Seidner each contributing one.
MIT 14, CMS 11
CMS started their second day of the tournament against MIT, taking a tough 14-11 loss. Cullen was the only Stag to find the net in the first quarter, while the Beavers went up 4-1 going into the second.
The Stags picked it up in the second, trading goals with the Beavers throughout the quarter. Each team scored three, with Cullen and Cogan putting points on the board for CMS. The score was 7-4 at halftime.
Maintaining their intensity, the Stags outscored their opponents by one in the third quarter. Junior Alex Waggoner (CMC), Cogan, and Cullen helped CMS close the gap. They entered the fourth quarter 7-9.
Down by two, the Stags were unable to overtake the Beavers in the fourth, and were outscored 5-4. Four different players contributed for CMS, but the final score was 14-11.
Cullen led CMS with four goals. Cogan and Waggoner scored twice each, and Bakar contributed one goal.
Harvard 12, CMS 10
CMS concluded their tournament with a close match against Harvard, falling to the Ivy League team by a score of 12-10. The Stags started out strong, trading goals and ending the quarter tied 2-2.
The second quarter brought CMS their first lead of the day. Two goals from Bakar and another from Cogan brought the Stags into half with a one goal advantage with a score of 5-4.
CMS stumbled in the third, allowing Harvard to find the net four times throughout the quarter. Goals from Tilton and Fullerton kept the Stags within one, and they started the fourth quarter down 8-7.
Down by one, the Stags traded goals with the Pilgrims in the fourth quarter. Tied at the two minute mark after goals form Cullen, Bakar, and Cogan, Harvard managed to respond with two more goals to solidify their advantage. The final score was 12-10.
Cullen and Bakar led the team against Harvard with three goals apiece, with Cogan, Fullerton, Taylor, and Hilborn contributing one each.
Cullen had a weekend high of twenty-two goals, followed by Bakar with nine, Cogan with eight, Hilborn with four, Fullerton with three, Waggoner with two, and Deer, Seidner, and Tilton with one each.
