Stags' SCIAC title hopes dashed by Whittier

REDLANDS, Calif. - In the title match of the 2014 Men's Water Polo SCIAC Championships, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps team came up short against Whittier, 11-5.

The aggressive Poets jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first quarter with the Stags only getting on the board in the last 11 seconds on a Mark Nietzel (CMC) goal.

The teams traded goals in the second quarter, Ellison Taylor with his first score on the day for CMS. The Stags trailed 6-2 at halftime.

CMS returned from halftime with intensity and scored twice before the Poets could answer. The third quarter was the only period that saw the Stags score more than one goal - Tanner Cullen (CMC) and Adam Hilborn (CMC) with the goals, bringing CMS within two scores of Whittier at 6-4.

The Poets then went on a four goal run, holding the Stags scoreless for eight minutes on the clock. CMS attempted a rally late in the game with the second goal by Taylor but it was not enough, ultimately losing 11-5.

Whittier's win propels them into the NCAA Tournament for men's water polo.
