Second SCIAC win for Stags in 15-8 victory over Cal Lu

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In their second SCIAC game of the season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team beat Cal Lutheran 15-8 on Wednesday afternoon. Eight Stags contributed to the scoring and senior goalie James Kelly recorded 14 saves.

CMS took an early two goal lead, both scored by junior driver Adam Hilborn. Cal Lutheran kept the game close, scoring in the final seconds of the first quarter to trail the Stags by just one goal, 4-3.

The Stags scored five goals in the second quarter by four different players. The score by junior attacker McClatchy Ruskin with just fewer than three minutes on the clock gave CMS their first four-goal advantage. The Kingsmen found the back of the net with 21 seconds remaining but junior attacker Tanner Cullen punched back within 15 seconds to put the Stags up 9-5 to end the first half.

In the third quarter, CMS demonstrated they had control of the game with three unanswered goals including a penalty shot by Cullen.

Kelly came up with a big save on a penalty shot midway through the fourth quarter followed by two goals by freshman utility Noah Deer to secure the 15-8 victory.

The Stags (6-12, 2-0 SCIAC) are undefeated in conference play and next face Occidental this Saturday, Oct. 25 in Eagle Rock at 11 a.m.
