Stags lose in OT to Cal Baptist 14-13

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team lost a tight game against Cal Baptist on Saturday 14-13 in overtime. The score was tied at the end of three of the four quarters of regulation time with Cal Baptist only gaining the one goal advantage in overtime.

CMS had the lead twice in the game, the first time not coming until the fourth quarter. When junior attacker McClatchy Ruskin scored with 5:40 remaining on the clock, the Stags took an 11-10 lead. Less than a minute later CBU tied it back up with a goal by Brent Teraoka. The game stayed tied at 11-11 for the rest of regulation time.

CMS took an early lead in the first overtime period with a goal from junior attacker Tanner Cullen, his third in the match. Cal Baptist quickly tied the score again and went ahead 13-12. Junior Driver Adam Hilborn scored in the second overtime to even the score at 13 apiece.

Eric Cornohan for the Lancers scored the game winner with less than a minute left and the Stags clock ran out before the Stags could score again.

Eight different Stags scored in Saturday's game. Cullen led CMS with three goals while senior Mark Nietzel, Hilborn and junior Daniel Cogan each had two goals.

CBU's goalie, Joseph Moorman, set a program record of 27 saves during the game.

CMS (4-12) begins SCIAC play at La Verne at 11 a.m. on Oct. 18.
