CMS takes two wins in first day of Gary Troyer Tournament
CLAREMONT, Calif. – Seven members of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team scored at least a goal during the first day of the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament in wins over George Washington (12-9) and Fresno Pacific (11-9).
CMS 12, George Washington 9
The Stags' fans were concerned with the 4-0 deficit in the first quarter but CMS calmly worked back into the game. By the end of the period, CMS had scored a few and reduced the Colonials' the lead to 5-2. Noah Deer scored both goals and they were within 32 seconds of each other, late in the first quarter.
In a big second quarter, CMS tied the game and then took the 7-6 lead and never looked back. In the final quarter, Alex Waggoner allowed the Stags to take an 11-7 lead and then Tanner Cullen shut the door with the 12th goal in the game for CMS. The Stags won 12-9 over the George Washington Colonials.
Ultimately Adam Hilborn was the Stags' leading scorer with three goals, one in the second and two in the third quarter. For GW, Pehlivan had four of their nine goals scoring in the first, third and fourth quarters.
CMS 11, Fresno Pacific 9
In the second game on the day for the Stags, CMS only trailed once after the first goal from Fresno Pacific. From then on, CMS controlled the game. After the first quarter, the Stags led 5-2 with goals from Ellison Taylor, Mark Nietzel, Eric Bakar and two from Waggoner.
CMS maintained at least a two-goal lead for the remainder of the game with scoring in each quarter. With 11 seconds left in the third quarter, Hilborn tacked on his second goal of the game and fifth during the day.
Fresno Pacific gained momentum in the second half and out-scored the Stags in the third and fourth quarters. For the Sunbirds, Daniel Seymour and David Maes tallied three goals apiece with one of Maes' goals bringing Fresno Pacific within two goals of CMS at the end of the game before time ran out.
Rye Newman played the entire second game of the day in goal, making a few excellent saves. After the game, head coach Greg Lonzo was extremely complimentary of Newman's efforts guarding the net.
So far, the tournament has allowed much of the team to have time in the water and Coach Lonzo was enthusiastic that he had "contributions from all over the pool."
Games in the tournament continue on Saturday, Oct. 4 with the Stags (4-9) playing against Johns Hopkins (11:20 a.m.) and either Massachusetts Institute of Technology or Whittier at 4:40 p.m. or 6 p.m.
