CMS tops Fresno Pacific at Lancer Invite for first win of the season
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Behind an offensive outburst from junior attacker Tanner Cullen, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team went 1-1 at the Lancer Invite hosted by Cal Baptist on Sept. 19, and nabbed their first win of the regular season. CMS defeated Fresno Pacific 15-11 and then dropped its second match, 13-8 to Concordia. In the two matches, Cullen scored 13 of the team's 23 goals. CMS is now 1-8 on the season.
CMS 15, Fresno Pacific 11
The Stags overcame as much as a four-goal deficit in the second quarter to come back and get the win. After a goal by Fresno Pacific's David Maes, CMS trailed 8-4 with 6:59 left before halftime. CMS then ran off four-consecutive goals to even the score at 8-8 when freshman Noah Deer scored at the 2:46 mark of the second quarter. During the run which tied the match, three players scored for CMS, including two goals from sophomore utility Ellison Taylor. At halftime, CMS led 9-8.
CMS' Cullen added to the lead in the third quarter with a pair of goals followed by a goal from junior attacker Daniel Cogan with 1:58 left in the third quarter. When the run was all said and done, CMS led 11-8 and outscored Fresno Pacific 7-0 over 13 minutes of game time, which stretched from early in the second quarter to late in the third quarter.
Fresno Pacific narrowed CMS' lead to 11-10 with 11 seconds left in the third quarter on a goal by Kyle Madel. Cullen then answered for CMS with a goal with 5:29 left in the match to give CMS a 12-10 lead and the lead would expand from their as CMS closed out the match with a 15-11 win. Cullen had a match-high eight goals while Taylor and Cogan added three scores each.
Concordia 13, CMS 8
CMS scored the first goal of the match at the 6:28 mark of the first quarter but it would be the only time CMS would lead as the advantage did not last for long. Concordia tied the game up at 1-1 90 seconds later as Matthew Mundell from Concordia found the back of the net. With the match even at 2-2, Concordia scored three-straight goals and led 5-3 at the end of the first quarter. CMS kept the match close, trailing 7-5 at halftime and 7-6 early in the third quarter.
Concordia took command of the match in the third quarter with a 4-0 run to move ahead 11-6. Cullen CMS with five scores while Rhett Turvey had four to lead Concordia.
