Win streak hits five for Stags after perfect showing at Gary Troyer Tournament

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Over the weekend at the Gary Troyer Tournament, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team went 4-0 over the two-day tournament hosted by Pomona-Pitzer. After starting the season 0-5, CMS has now won five matches in a row and eight of its 11 matches overall to run its record to 7-8 on the season.

CMS 9, Johns Hopkins 8 (Friday)
A goal by junior utility Mark Nietzel with 5:57 remaining in the fourth quarter gave CMS the game-winning goal as they came back in this back-and-forth match to pull out the 9-8 win. CMS led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter only to see Johns Hopkins outscore CMS 3-1 in the second quarter to even the score at 4-4 at halftime. The teams traded goals for the remainder of the match with the game tied or Johns Hopkins holding a lead for the third quarter. CMS got its lead back at the 6:52 mark of the fourth quarter to take an 8-7 lead on a goal by sophomore attacker Tanner Cullen who had five goals in the match and 12 in the tournament to lead the team. Junior goalie James Kelly had 12 saves for CMS.

CMS 15, Washington & Jefferson 6 (Friday)
The second match of the afternoon saw CMS lead throughout as the team jumped out to a 10-2 lead at halftime and built as many as a 10-score lead (15-5) in the second half. Nine different players scored in the game for CMS. Sophomore driver Adam Hilborn and freshman Ellison Taylor each had three goals for CMS while Kelly and freshman goalie Richard Newman split time in net with six and eight goals, respectively.

CMS 13, George Washington 2 (Saturday)
Senior Maarten Lefor scored the first goal for CMS just 23 seconds into the match as the Stags opened the second day of the tournament with the 13-2 win. Lefor led CMS with three scores in the match. CMS gave up its only two goals of the match in the first quarter and led 4-2. The defense then shut out George Washington for the final three quarters to earn the win as Kelly had nine saves in net.

CMS 11, Notre Dame (Ohio) 8 (Saturday)
Senior attackers Huston Middlesworth and John Holland got CMS out 2-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game with a goal each. Jonathan Cubillos narrowed the CMS lead to 2-1 at the 2:38 mark of the first quarter. Then with 2:24 left in the first quarter, Lefor scored and started a game-deciding 6-0 run by CMS that turned a 2-1 CMS lead into a 8-1 lead by CMS with 5:32 left in the second quarter. Middlesworth had a team-high three scores for CMS while Newman had his best showing of the tournament in net with 14 saves.
