Stags Water Polo Advances To SCIAC Semifinals

In the opening round of the SCIAC tournament, #1 seed CMS took down #8 CalTech by a score of 20-4. The Stags enjoyed balanced scoring, as 13 Stags found the back of the net, all scorers led by Brian Chong, who had four.

In the opening minutes, the teams traded goals, as Maarten Lefor got the Stags on the board first, but Daniel Sexton of CIT notched a 5-meter penalty shot. After, however, the Stags held CalTech scoreless and went up on a five goal run before time expired.

The second period saw ample playing time for all the Stags, and provided an opportunity to run plays and execute their strategized game plan. By the end of the quarter, the Stags had displayed their dominance, going ahead 13-1 at the end of the half.

After the intermission, CMS went back to a strong attack to put the game away, and held their lead, scoring five goals in the quarter. As in previous periods, CMS was able to convert opportunities in the front court while holding the opposing offense to limited chances through a solid defense.

The fourth quarter was a matter of holding the lead and preventing any major mistakes for the Stags. CalTech was able to net two in the quarter, but CMS matched this goal total, giving them the victory by a final score of 20-4.

With the victory, CMS advances to the SCIAC semi-final match tomorrow, Saturday November 12, at 3:15 vs. #4 Cal Lutheran University.
