15 Stags Capture USTFCCCA All-West Region Honors

CLAREMONT, Calif. - A total of 15 members of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team earned All-West Region honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the organization announced this week.

All-West Region honors are awarded to anyone who finishes in the top five in the region in an individual event, or the top three in a relay. Jamie Cockburn, who was named the SCIAC Track Athlete of the Year, earned the distinction in three different events, the 200 meters, the 400 meters and the 4x400 relay, while Jason Bowman captured it in two different throws (shot put and hammer).

Cockburn qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in the 200 meters, and was joined on the USTFCCCA All-West Region team by seven teammates who also qualified for nationals in their individual events: Kai Dettman (800 meters), Daniel Sealand (1500 meters), Henry Pick (5000 meters), Stevie Steinberg (5000 meters), Adam Wilkinson (steeplechase), Maxwell Knowles (javelin) and Truman Knowles (javelin). In addition, Massimo Bertini, Nick Teresi and Christian Campbell were part of the 4x400 relay team with Cockburn that competed at nationals and earned USTFCCCA All-Region distinction.

John Horan was an All-West Region winner in the pole vault after finishing the regular season tied for 20th in Division III, but narrowly missing an NCAA invitation due to the tiebreaker. Sarath Kakani, who was the SCIAC Champion in the shot put, earned all-region accolades as well, as did Joshua Martinez, who was second in the 110-meter hurdles at the league championships.

CMS earned the SCIAC Championship by just over 100 points, taking its second straight league title after a two-year absence following the 2019 championship. The Stags went on to finish 28th at nationals, with Henry Pick (fourth in the 5000) and Truman Knowles (sixth in the javelin) earning All-America honors.
