Jamie Cockburn Earns SCIAC Men's Track Athlete of the Year Award

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior Jamie Cockburn captured the SCIAC Men's Track Athlete of the Year Award in a vote of the league's coaches, the conference office announced today.

In addition, head coach Glenn Stewart and his staff (Marina Muncan, Veronica Bell Amarasekara, Lekeisha Moore, Jeff Venglass, Chris Ramirez and Jessika Sninscak) earned the SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year honor after guiding the Stags to a first-place finish at the conference championships.

Cockburn earned the award after a dominant performance at the SCIAC Track and Field Championships, sweeping the 200 meters and the 400 meters and anchoring the 4x400 relay to a first-place finish as well. He won the 200 meters in 21.53, which moves him into third place all-time at CMS, while his winning 48.60 in the 400 also moved him into a tie for ninth.

Since the SCIAC Championships, Cockburn has moved up into third place in the 400 as well after clocking a 47.87 at the Occidental Invitational on Saturday. That time also places him in the top 15 in Division III this year and in position to qualify for the NCAA Championships (the top 20 receive invitations).

Capturing the SCIAC honor capped a triumphant return for Cockburn, who missed two months of competition between Jan. 29 and March 26. He was slowly able to get himself back into form, including a first-place finish in the 400 at the final SCIAC Multi-Dual on April 16 (48.87) and ended up on the top of the SCIAC podium three times.

The conference also officially announced its All-SCIAC winners, who finished top three at the SCIAC Championships, and the following Stags captured All-SCIAC distinction on April 30-May 1.
