CMS Men's Track and Field Pulls Away for 100-Point Win to Repeat as SCIAC Champions

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team trailed by two points after the first day of the SCIAC Championships on Saturday, but won six events on Sunday as it pulled away for a dominant win to repeat as league champions, ending with a spread of over 100 points.

CMS concluded the meet with 225 points, finishing well ahead of Pomona-Pitzer in second with 123 and Whittier in third with 121. 

Jamie Cockburn led the way on Sunday with a sweep of the 200 meters and 400 meters, while anchoring the winning 4x400 relay in the final event of the day, with Christian Campbell, Nick Teresi and Kai Dettman also contributing. Henry Pick earned the championship in the 5000 meters in the final individual event with a 14:20.80, adding it to his SCIAC Championship during cross country season in the fall and moving into second place all-time for the Stags. 

In the throws, CMS picked up two more individual wins as Truman Knowles led a 1-2-3 finish in the javelin, with older brother Maxwell Knowles finished second and Jason Bowman third. Truman Knowles had a top throw of 199-0, which matched the throw that Maxwell Knowles had to win the SCIAC in 2019, tying for fourth all-time in program history. Sarath Kakani won the shot put, with Tyson-Jay Saena, yesterday's winner in the hammer throw, coming in second. 

In addition to Maxwell Knowles and Saena, CMS had four other individuals finish as runner-up. Daniel Sealand earned a second place finish in the 1500 meters at 3:51.59, and also finished fourth in the 800 meters, with Dettman coming in second to earn All-SCIAC honors. Stevie Steinberg was second behind Pick in the 5000, while Joshua Martinez was second in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.80. 

CMS had a big showing in the 200 meters, where it had five of the top seven, with Cockburn winning in 21.53, which moves him into third place all-time at CMS (his winning 48.60 in the 400 also moves him into a tie for ninth). Campbell came in third, Quincey Williams fifth, Massimo Bertini sixth and Teresi seventh. Campbell (fourth), Teresi (seventh) and Timi Balogun (eighth) all scored in the 100 meters, and contributed to a second-place finish in the 4x100 relay, along with Williams. 

Kyril van Schendel (fifth in the 5000), Bertini (sixth in the 400) and Daniel Krasemann (eighth in the 1500) also picked up points for CMS on the track. Martinez (seventh in the triple jump), Bowman (sixth in the shot put), and Jacob Yep (seventh in the shot put) also scored in the field events. 

CMS will continue on with its SCIAC Championship in hand, as several Stags will continue to compete in qualifying events in the next two weeks, beginning with the Occidental Invitational this weekend, in hopes of earning a place at the NCAA Division III Championships at the end of May.
