Steinberg wins 5000 Meters at Whitworth Invitational

SPOKANE, Wash. - Stevie Steinberg finished in first place in the 5000 meters, and Kai Dettman earned the fourth-fastest 800 meter time in Division III during indoor season to highlight the performance of the CMS men's track and field team at the Whitworth Indoor Invitational on Saturday.

Steinberg won the 5000 meters in 14:55.29, edging out Michael Sahagun of La Verne in 14:57.62 to take first place. His time ranks 37th in Division III Indoor season. 

Henry Pick, who already has the fourth-best 3000 time in Division III this year, which he set at the Boston University Season Opener in December, ran a 4:10.92 in the mile, while Daniel Sealand added a 4:14.84. 

Kai Dettman's 800 meters time of 1:52.92, which won his section, was sixth at the Whitworth Invitational, with three of the runners in front of him competing for Division I Idaho. 

Miles Christensen was ninth in the 3000 meters in 8:34.27, and still ranks tenth in Division III in that event from the Boston University Season Opener, when he clocked an 8:19.30.  

In the 400 meters, Massimo Bertini ran a 49.73 to earn fourth. Christian Campbell qualified for the finals in the 60 meters by breaking seven seconds in 6.99, and finished 12th against a field of all-division competitors. 

CMS added another win in the 4x400 relay, where Bertini, Dettman, Campbell and Colin Scanlon finished in 3:23.57 to edge out Lewis-Clark by .09. 

The Stags will have one more qualifying meet at the University of Washington in two weeks as they try to earn their way to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Winston Salem, N.C. on March 11-12.
