CMS Men's 4x100 Relay Team Breaks Program Record at Azusa Pacific Twilight Meet

AZUSA, Calif. - The CMS 4x100 relay team of senior Matthew Guillory, sophomore Carter Henderson, freshman Jamie Cockburn and senior Corbin Bethurem ran a 41.18 at the Azusa Pacific Twilight & Multi on Friday evening, setting a new program record and putting them in strong position to qualify for nationals later this month.

The old school record of 41.23 (Comfort-Pham-Wong-Wright) had stood for 23 years since being set during the 1996 campaign. Guillory and Bethurem were part of a relay team as freshmen in 2016 that ran a 41.72, which was as close as any CMS foursome had come since 2003 (before this year's group ran a 41.65 earlier this season). 

The time also ties CMS for fifth in all of Division III this season with John Carroll, only .12 behind the national leaders from Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The Stags came into the day in 30th place nationally, on the outside looking in for national qualification (top 16), but jumped all the way into the top five by trimming almost a half-second off their top time. With very few "last chance" style events remaining around the country, they are in a great position to earn their way to Geneva, Ohio for the NCAA Division III Championships (May 23-25).

More members of the SCIAC Champion Stags and Athenas will be in action tomorrow at the Occidental Invitational as they try to earn qualifying marks for nationals.
